The primary gateway to Kyoto is Osaka's Kansai International Airport (KIX). If you, however, choose to arrive at Tokyo or any other city in Japan, you may also be able to fly into Osaka's domestic airport, Itami Airport (ITM) which is closer to Kyoto.
You may also take the Bullet train (Shin-Kan-Sen) directly to Kyoto from major cities. More information on the train travel can be found in Central Japan Railway Company's web site.
Train: See the University's Visitor Information.
Bus: See the Osaka Airport Limousine's web site. Some buses in the evening run directly to hotel areas inside the city.
Train: Take the Osaka Monorail to Minami-Ibaraki station, and take the Hankyu Kyoto line. The line runs into the center of Kyoto with several stations in the city.
An alternative is to take the Osaka Monorail to Kadoma-shi station, and take the Keihan line which also runs into the center of Kyoto with several stations in the city.
Bus: See the Osaka Airport Limousine's web site. Some buses in the evening run directly to hotel areas inside the city.
Train: Take the Meitetsu Airport Express to Nagoya station, and take the Bullet train directly to Kyoto from there. Duration: 1h10m (without connection time).
Most international flights to Tokyo will arrive at Narita airport.
Air: There are four flights per day to/from Osaka's Itami Airport (ITM). Duration: 1h20m.
Train: Take the Narita Express to Tokyo, and take the Bullet train directly to Kyoto from there. Duration: 3h15m (without connection time).
Though it is a domestic airport, there are flights to/from Seoul, Gimpo (GMP) and Shanghai, Hongqiao (SHA) airports.
Air: There are many flights to/from Osaka's two airports; KIX and ITM. Duration: 1h00m to 1h15m.
Train: Take local train / monorail / bus to Tokyo or Shinagawa station, and take the Bullet train directly to Kyoto from there. Duration: approximately 3h00m (with connection time).
You will need a Visa to enter Japan except for the countires listed in this page. If you posess a passport issued from countries other than those in the list, please start preparing for the application of a Visa as soon as possible. Some Q&A are here.
