PhD students

NII offers 3-year and 5-year PhD within SOKENDAI (The Graduate University for Advanced Studies), in which it constitutes the Department of Informatics. Read more information at the graduate program page.

There are scholarships and RA positions. See here for more details. Hourly wages for RA are

• D1 and D2 in 5-year course students: 1,100 yen (Monthly pay: 90,000 yen (Approx.))

• Doctoral course students: 1,200 yen (Monthly pay: 100,000 yen (Approx.))

Entrance exams are held twice a year.

Internships (for PhD students)

NII offers internship program for period of 2‒6 months. On-site program offers

• 5,700 yen/day in sojourn expenses

• Cost of overseas travelers’ personal accident insurance

Postdocs

JSPS offers various funding. For example, Standard Program offers

• up to two years of fellowship

• ¥362,000 per month

• A round-trip air ticket

• A settling-in allowance of ¥200,000

NII also offers a limited number of postdoc positions twice a year. Please ask.

Visiting scholars

JSPS offers two kinds of programs; long-term (2-10 months) and short-term (14-60 days). Application deadlines are typically September for long-term and May and September for short-term.
